Causes of flicker on monochrome LCD screen

Oct 15, 2022|

There are many reasons why the monochrome LCD screen flickers, but the frequency is not too high. Otherwise, wouldn't the high refresh rate of the TV become a joke? The human eye has basically no flickering feeling for the screen refreshed above 60HZ. The LCD industry is basically above 50HZ, and the higher one is 120HZ. The higher the screen, the less flickering, but the power consumption is large.

If you can confirm that the frequency of the screen itself is high enough (software setting), you can confirm whether it flickers differently under different light sources. If your monochrome LCD screen has a backlight, it is best to turn off the backlight and see if it flashes in sunlight to confirm whether the backlight flashes. In the same way, compare the effects of artificial light sources (fluorescent lamps) and the sun, because at some specific frequencies, your screen may flicker at a frequency similar to that of artificial light sources.

If it is the problem of the monochrome screen itself, mainly consider the software settings and improve the parameters related to the frequency. If it cannot be adjusted, increase the OSC frequency of the IC to see if the flicker changes. If your screen is not COG, there are separate row and column driver chips, mainly depends on the chip settings of the row (common), you can measure the relevant signal to see if the row frequency is as set by the software.
